Boys’ room reveal – Part 1 (+ VIDEO)

October 26, 2017

house to home

Posted 09/12

It’s been over a year since we started design concepts for our basement space, and the boys’ room was our main motivation to make it happen! They were itching for a little room to stretch. We designed this space with the goal of making it a place that was both functional and peaceful so that they would enjoy spending time there. I couldn’t wait to add some color, so several paint swatches later, we chose Pratt and Lambert’s Accolade Interior Premium Paint & Primer in their 2018 Color of the Year, Heron (27-18).

When I saw this color, I knew it was exactly the hue I had been looking for that would tie together the tones we already had going in the space. It is a more sophisticated hue of blue that is super versatile with the type of style you are working with. Thinking through my boys’ personalities and interests, we decided to put the sofa that used to be in our living room against this wall to encourage a reading nook. They love books, animals, Star Wars, construction, art, planets, and superheroes. We will be putting bookshelves on the other side of the room, so we turned this space into a cozy area where all cool kids can hang….including mom and dad, if they let us.

I pulled design inspiration from Pratt & Lambert’s color forecast Beyond, which consists of four color trend stories: Diverge, Boundless, Synthesize and Intention. The color forecast and color of the year are selected by Pratt & Lambert’s color and design experts. Since we were looking to create a space that was a step away from distractions and media, we selected the color Heron (27-18) from the Intention trend story. The color palette of Intention was created to bring a more calm and mindful vibe to any room of the home, so it I love that it reflected the goals of the space. We used an eggshell finish for a more matte look.

Another design aspect featured in Intention is greenery. You might have noticed the plant life we put in almost every room in our home. That is because I think it brings so much peace to a space, and makes a room feel more inviting. I am so happy this room can be a little retreat for them.

We will share the rest of the boys’ room soon! I wouldn’t mind using this Heron blue paint in my own room now.  There is something so serene about it. Have you tried a bold color in your home? If a full room is too much a commitment for you, try just a wall! You will be surprised how much character it can contribute.

Here is a time lapse video we made compressing the span of the design process over a few days time down to one minute! If you like these type of videos, subscribe to on YouTube so we know to make more!

  1. I generally don’t like dark walls but the boys room works so well with the paint colour! It’s so grown up, I can see it lasting a long time!

  2. I’m pretty sure this needs to be titled ‘Little Man Suite Reveal Pt. 1’ :O

    STUNNING!

Off to go show this to the hub and tell him all the things I want for our basement now!

Love this! Where did you get the fiddle leaf? Is it real, looks beautiful!

  4. Laura

    says:

Ok I am so inspired! We have a huge master, and now rather than two chairs, I’m thinking a couch will make it a great place for our family to gather. Add some shelving for books (something our home really needs) and it would be so cozy. Love the paint color. We did hale navy in my son’s room, and I’m still loving it.

  5. Angela

    says:

LOVE that color!! Wow…. just wow.

  6. Beth

    says:

I really love it! Especially the colors. How amazing to take one wall and turn it into a reading nook. However, it seems way too dark to read on the couch. Don’t you need a reading light there to be able to read?

  7. Kirtley

    says:

I love their room and that color! I was wondering where you got the rug at?

  8. Shauna DG

    says:

I Love everything about It! Really looks like a spot they can really enjoy and grow with/in for a long time!
And the answer to the color question…. yes I have color in EVERY room. This is the 1st house we’ve owned and going from renting and not being able to paint … I kinda went a lil crazy?? my boys room is a beautiful blue a lil lighter to yours … when we painted we had them paint they’re lil hands with white paint and put they’re prints hidden in they’re closet. They’re covered by clothes but I take a peek every now and then and remember when they where that small ??
Trying to go the opposite and lighten the front room up though, hoping it will lighten and open up the small space.

  9. Beth says:

That looks fantastic! Maybe I missed it in the video, but what are the throw hooks?

  10. Nicole McKee says:

AMAZING!!! I love everything about the portion of the room you have shared. The color, the greenery, that sofa(!), and the water picture you have on the wall. Can I come visit?? 😉

  11. Britney says:

I love this!! It’s beautiful Anna!

  12. Heidi Ferguson

  15. Therese

    says:

Anna, just wondering how you keep the plants in your home safe from the littlest people in your home? (or keep the little people safe from the plant!)

  16. Linda Evans

    says:

Love the blanket hanger! Where are they from?

  17. Jill

    says:

Hi. You guys are the cutest. Excited for your new project too!
I swear you said somewhere that the blanket wall hooks were target. Was I right? thanks!

  18. Sena says:

Hi Anna, how do you layout beds for all 3 boys? Or do they not all share a room?
