I always say I should have lived in a different era – preferrable the fifties. It was quintessential class for style, ways of life, design…all of it. I especially love the movies though. AMC was my favorite channel growing up, no joke. I had big crushes on old Hollywood stars like Jimmy Stewart, Paul Newman, and Carey grant. Always and forever crushes I admit. Gabe is okay considering they are decades older than me ;);) What about you? Do you have an Old Hollywood crush?

Here are some of my favorites from each!

Jimmy Stewart:
The Shop Around the Corner
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Rear Window
Vertigo
It’s a Wonderful Life

Carey Grant:
North by Northwest
To Catch a Thief
Bishop’s Wife
Charade
The Philadelphia Story

Paul Newman:
Cool Hand Luke
The Sting
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid

What are some of yours? I would love to hear them!

Does Bruce Lee counts? I can’t think of anyone but him… lol I think he’s the cutest Chinese ever.

  2. Natalie B

    says:

My husband has never seen the “classics” so we have been working our way through them. We just watched to catch a thief. And a week ago it was the sting!

One of my faves is 12 Angry Men. Such a gooooood show! (The one with Henry Fonda)

  3. Jamie G says:

Jimmy Stewart is my hero! My bf actually turned me no to his movies. We just watched Cool Hand Luke again this weekend, and Paul Newman is hunkier than any of our current heart throbs. How can you beat that smile?!!?1 SWOON!

  4. jillian

    says:

love this! i always thought that paul newman was so cute. i also really loved robert redford in “barefoot in the park.” xo jillian – cornflake dreams

  5. Jessie says:

Clark Gable in It Happened One Night; William Powell in My Man Godfrey; Paul Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen.

And I fully support all your choices especially The Philadelphia Story – one of my faves!!

  6. Yvonne says:

    Montgomery Clift.

  7. Marchelle

    says:

Love these actors! And The Philadelphia Story is so much a favorite of mine that, a few years back, I directed and produced a high school performance of the play! My acting students totally loved it!
My old Hollywood crushes (besides the above-mentioned):
    James Garner
    Louis Jourdan
    Danny Kaye

  8. Whitney says:

My old Hollywood crushes are Steve McQueen, Jimmy Stewart, and Cary Grant. I’ve always loved the quote from Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos: “Jimmy Stewart is always and indisputably the best man in the world, unless of course, Cary Grant should happen to show up.” So so true! 😉

  9. Courtney says:

ahh Jimmy Stewart! I’ve always enjoyed some Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney.

  10. Gloria says:

I really need to step up my classic movies game 🙂 Young Marlon Brando makes me swoon!

  11. Portia Antonio

    says:

Love this post! I’ve always enjoyed classic movies. My favorite is Teacher’s Pet with Clark Gable and Doris Day. I watch it with my dad and sisters all the time!!

  12. Jillian says:

I love this! My husband is always recommending classic movies for us to watch. I think I might impress him with a few of my own from this list!

  13. Ah, the 50s were definitely a fantastic era! Having studied fashion history, I’m intrigued by so many aspects of every era (especially when it comes to 30s-50s fashion)! I need to watch more old film, though, so thanks for these recommendations – I think I’ll make a movie night out of it one day soon!!

  14. Nikki H

    says:

We have the same three old hollywood crushes! lol. But, how could you forget An Affair to Remember (Cary Grant)? Also, it’s far lesser known, and kind of hard to find, but if you can track down a copy of Sometimes a Great Notion (Paul Newman) it’s definitely worth a watch 🙂

  15. Megan

    says:

Definitely Cary Grant in An Affair to Remember and Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. LOVE both of those movies!!

  16. christina says:

Rear Window is so good! Cary Grant is dreamy, too.

I LOVE Steve McQueen. He was my biggest crush from the time I was 12 and all through my teen years and is still the greatest. I’ve always loved the blond-and-rugged look, and he became a Christian before he died, so he holds a special place in my heart.
    So my list goes:
    1. Steve McQueen
    2.William Shatner
    3. Hardy Kruger
    4. Tim Matheson
    5. James MacArthur
