DIY: J. Crew Inspired Jade Maxi Skirt

March 15, 2012

DIY

Posted 09/12

When I received the March J. Crew magazine in the mail I only needed to see the cover to know it was probably not the best thing for me to look through the rest of the catalogue.  I was already having major outfit envy over the cover page outfit alone. Then it hit me…
I could totally DIY this baby….
And so with a 1/2 yard of fabric, a zipper, and some hem tape….
I am now the proud owner of the must have jade green maxi I SO needed in my spring line up:) Of course, it doesn’t have the cool pockets (my next project to tackle) but it still does the trick!
To make one of your own (no sew or sew!):
Take your measurements around widest part of your hips and from waist to floor. Cut fabric as needed leaving a half inch wider on all edges for hems.
*UPDATE: I used liquid stitch the second go round and it works miracles! Definately the solution for those of you scared of the sewing machine. It is stronger than hem tape and easy to use!
Using your sewing machine, hem tape, or liquid stitch, create a 1/2 inch hem on top and bottom.
Continue to sew or liquid stitch your zipper to the top end of both sides of your fabric.
Once attached, below the zipper, fold and hem the sides together down to the back of the knee. (I hemmed one side and left the other side un-hemmed. I layered this side below the hemmed side and sewed together.) Finish hemming both sides separately after the knee point so that you have a slit in the back to leave for walking room 🙂 Try on your skirt and measure the amount on each side you need to fold in. Once this is measured, fold in the sides on each side, flip the skirt inside out and stitch or hem tape together. Cut excess fabric.
Zipper found here. Fabric found at Hobby Lobby.
Total Cost: $10
I am no seamstress or master sewer so forgive me if the directions are not clear enough! You can always email me with any questions you have:)
This is my Happy St. Patrick’s Day DIY for you, that I hope you enjoy!
